Irrésistible de Cuvelier

This is a rather old Breton pattern that is probably the ancestor of the Panama. In effect, the Panama did not appear until the twenties and André Ragot remembers that a professional fly tier, Mme. Gourmelon-Cren, of Lambezellec, near Brest, was well known for her models of the Irrésistibles de Cuvelier before then. My own research in this area was without positive result. The fly that carries the name of Cuvelier was first described by Léon Tillier in the January 1937 issue of the Pêche Illustrée.

The design of the Irrésistible is very close to the male variant of the Panama.

Hook: 8 to 12, black tying silk

Tails: Golden pheasant tippets

Body: Natural raffia with a black peacock butt at the tail

Hackle: Gray partridge supported by two long furnace cock hackles

Wings: Two, made from the tips of the hackle used as the collar
